Water Consumption Topic Methodology

We are excited to announce the release of the final version of the Topic Methodology for Water Consumption.

Developed by the International Foundation for Valuing Impacts (IFVI), now part of Capitals Coalition, in partnership with the Value Balancing Alliance (VBA), the Water Consumption Topic Methodology enables companies to measure and value in monetary terms the impacts of water use on people and the natural environment.

By linking water consumption to changes in natural capital and human well-being, the methodology translates water use into tangible societal costs, helping organizations understand the implications of water use across locations and value chains. Companies and investors can use this methodology to develop impact accounts, manage water-related risks, and support more informed, sustainable decision-making.

The methodology builds on leading frameworks and standards, including ESRS, GRI, and scientific approaches to valuing ecosystem services and health impacts.
